Course Information
Description
Performing FEES involves two types of skills: technical skills and cognitive skills. Typically, SLPs are first taught the mechanical aspect of passing an endoscope safely and moving between pre-swallow and post-swallow positions. SLPs then dive into implementing their cognitive skills to make real-time decisions during the exam and appropriately score FEES results. In this presentation, we will discuss FEES protocols to streamline identification of underlying physiological deficits, various interpretation tools for improving diagnostic reliability, and tips for identifying and describing abnormal laryngeal findings. Images and clips from FEES exams will be included to enhance learning.
Learning Outcomes
Explain how non-swallowing tasks can enhance FEES interpretation.
Describe laryngeal abnormalities and indicators for laryngology consultation.
List tools which can be used to improve reliability of FEES interpretation.
