Integrating DIGEST into Clinical Practice

Taught by Dr. Kate Hutcheson

This session provides a practical overview of the Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity (DIGEST) and its role as an evidence-based tool for assessing swallowing safety and efficiency. Participants will learn how to get started with DIGEST, including recommended resources, workflow considerations, and strategies that support successful clinical adoption. The course will also outline how DIGEST integrates with complementary frameworks and standardized tools to enhance consistency in evaluation and reporting. Through case-based discussion, attendees will explore how DIGEST informs clinical decision-making and contributes to treatment planning.

Neurology and the Role of the Speech Language Pathologist- Part 2

Taught by Anna Swindle, MA, CCC-SLP, CBIS

Neurology and the Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist – Part 2 builds on foundational concepts introduced in Part 1 to further explore the neurological underpinnings of communication and swallowing. This session emphasizes the clinical relevance of cortical and subcortical structures for practicing speech-language pathologists. Participants will learn to recognize cortical ‘signs’ that may present during assessment, understand the general motor pathway from the cortex to head and neck muscles, and identify key subcortical tracts often visualized on head imaging. Using real case studies, this course illustrates how neuroanatomical knowledge directly informs differential diagnosis, clinical reasoning, and treatment planning. Practical take-home points and interactive discussion will support clinicians in applying neurological concepts to everyday practice across settings.

Tackling Challenging Head & Neck Cancer Cases

Taught by Jessica Wind Gregor, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S

This course is a clinical case-based learning experience designed for speech-language pathologists involved in head and neck cancer rehabilitation and survivorship care. Through four structured case reviews, participants will explore the full SLP care pathway, from initial assessment through treatment planning, long-term surveillance, and quality of life considerations. The course emphasizes distinguishing when to prioritize rehabilitation versus compensatory or palliative management strategies and provides guidance for navigating difficult conversations related to health-related quality of life and patient-centered decision-making. Real-world examples, discussion, and Q&A will allow clinicians to deepen clinical reasoning, strengthen interdisciplinary communication, and apply evidence-informed approaches to complex cases in head and neck cancer care.
