VASES Demystified: Strategic Implementation and Rationale for Use in the Clinical Setting

  • This complimentary, virtual course will be hosted on May 22, 2024 from 8:00 - 9:00 PM EST. All are welcome to join this free event. The registration link can be found using the button below.

  • Visual Analysis of Swallowing Efficiency and Safety (VASES) is a standardized approach to assessing functional swallowing outcomes during flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:

    Describe the clinical gaps in FEES interpretation that VASES is intended to address.

    Describe the four domains of VASES interpretation.

    Describe how to document VASES ratings within a clinical report.

    Describe how to communicate VASES ratings during oral and written communication contexts.

    Describe how to use VASES’ normative reference values to aide in the diagnosis of a disorder.

  • This course is eligible for 0.1 ASHA CEUs or 1 PDH.

    To obtain ASHA CEUs, participants must attend the entirety of the live offering and will need to complete a course survey. The link for the survey, which includes comprehension and self-reflection questions, will be provided within the course materials. All surveys must be completed no later than 5/29/24 at 5:00 PM EST.

Course Presenter: Dr. James Curtis

  • Dr. James Curtis is an Assistant Professor of Speech-Language Pathology and principal investigator of the Aerodigestive Innovations Research lab (AIR) within the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University.

    Dr. Curtis’ clinical training is as a speech-language pathologist, with expertise in the evaluation and treatment of people with voice, cough, and swallowing disorders.

    As director of the AIR lab, his mission is to improve the health and quality-of-life of people with dysphonia, dystussia, and dysphagia through clinical innovation, scientific discovery, and multidisciplinary collaborations.

    His current lines of research include: (1) identifying mechanisms of voice, cough, and swallowing disorders in people with neurologic disease; (2) testing the effects of respiratory-swallow coordination training and cough skill training on airway protective outcomes; and (3) developing novel and clinically feasible techniques for voice, cough, and swallowing assessments and treatments.

  • Dr. Curtis is a salaried employee of Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University, was paid an honorarium for this training course, and was one of developers of VASES.

  • Q: I missed the live offering! Can I still access the course?

    • A: Yes! All offerings will be recorded and uploaded to our website.

    Q: How do I obtain ASHA CEUs?

    • A: All offerings require attendance for the entirety of the live course. Additionally, participants will need to complete a brief survey for the offering within 5 business days of the course. All survey links will be posted on this site.

    Q: I don’t want ASHA CEUs, but still want credit for the live offerings. What are the requirements?

    • A: We are happy to offer PDHs for all live offerings. Simply fill out the survey and indicate on the form that you wish to obtain PDHs. We will send you a certificate of completion for your records.
